Brunnette, Davies recognized with honors for 2016-17 indoor season

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Two Plymouth State University runners received top honors from the Little East Conference (LEC) Thursday for their performances during the 20-16-17 men's indoor track & field season.

Sophomore Sam Brunnette (Newport, Vt.) was named LEC Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Year, and freshman Derek Davies (Londonderry, N.H.) was selected LEC Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Year. Brunnette earns his second major LEC award of the year, having been named LEC Men's Cross Country Runner of the Year last fall.

A sophomore distance runner, Brunnette highlighted his indoor season by winning two Little East and New England Alliance individual championships last month. He captured his second straight LEC and Alliance indoor title in the 3000 meters, and earned his first championship in the mile run. He completed the mile in a personal-best 4:17.78, and ran the 3000 in 8:49.45, more than four seconds faster than last year's win.

Brunnette went on to a fifth place finish in the mile at the New England Division III Championships in 4:17.84. He currently has the ninth fastest time in New England in both the mile and the 3000 meters, and he ranks 33rd nationally in the 3000 meters and 49th in the mile.

A freshman pole vaulter, Davies turned in a top-notch performance for PSU in the pole vault at the Little East Championships, placing third in the New England Alliance scoring and second among LEC vaulters. His mark of 4.10 meters (13'5.25") matched his season-high and school record and was ranked 17th in New England at the time.

Davies went on to place 14th at the New England Division III Championships with a mark of 3.95 meters. His PR of 4.10 meters currently ranks 19th in New England, including fifth among freshmen.

Brunnette and Davies will join teammates Warren Bartlett (Penacook, N.H.), Selena Baillargeon (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) and Diana Perez (Cranston, R.I.) this Saturday for one last chance to qualify for the NCAA Indoor National Championships at a Final Qualifying Meet at Tufts University.
