PSU Men’s Outdoor Track & Field takes ninth at Snowflake Classic

Lewis, Squires set school records in first outdoor meet

MEDFORD, Mass. – Freshman Terrell Lewis (Nashua, N.H.) and senior Dean Squires Jr. (Derry, N.H.) both set new school records as the Plymouth State University men's outdoor track and field team competed at the Tufts University Snowflake Classic at Clarence Dussault Track on Saturday.

Lewis set a pair of records on the day. He qualified in first place in the 110-meter hurdles with a record time of 15.40 seconds. He was a touch slower in the finals, taking first place in 15.44 seconds. He also set a new mark in the high jump, clearing 1.98 meters (6' 6.00") to place second, clearing the previous mark by two inches.

Squires Jr. set a new standard in the hammer throw, eclipsing the former record by more than nine feet. His toss of 39.04 meters (128' 1") was good enough for 11th place in the field of 37. He also earned a 16th place finish in the javelin throw with a toss of 44.70 meters (146' 8").

PSU ended the day with 34 points to end up ninth out of 20 schools in the team standings. Tufts (153) took the team title, with WPI (119) and Bridgewater State University (70) rounding out the top three. The Panthers finished two points behind Little East Conference (LEC) rival University of Massachusetts Boston, and ahead of the University of Southern Maine (25) and Keene State College (5).

Along with Lewis, freshman Joey Baylus (Loudon, N.H.) was impressive in the hurdles as well, finishing with the third fastest time in preliminaries (16.07) before taking sixth in the finals in 16.10 seconds.

Juniors Sam Brunnette (Newport Center, Vt.) and Warren Bartlett (Loudon, N.H.), fresh off appearances at the NCAA DIII Indoor Track & Field National Championships, both performed well in their single events. Brunnette was the fastest collegiate competitor in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, finishing in 9:39.94, while Bartlett posted a time of 16:03.57 in the 5,000 meter run to finish 26th.

Junior Isiah Trask (Turner, Maine) posted the best time for PSU in the 100 meter dash, finishing 18th with a time of 11.86 seconds. Sophomore Noah Byington (Hanscom AFB, Mass.) ended up 24th in the 1,500 meter run in 4:20.95, and the Panthers' 4x100 meter relay team of Trask, Baylus, senior George Speechley (Barrington, N.H.) and Lewis posted a sixth place finish in 44.73 seconds.

In the field events, sophomore Leo Shattuck (Grafton, Mass.) finished ninth in the triple jump, leaping 12.37 meters (40' 7"), while ending 23rd in the long jump covering 5.85 meters (19' 2.50"). Freshman Tim Gray (Derby, Vt.) had a nice debut in the shot put with a heave of 11.84 meters (38' 10.25") to finish in 13th.

The Panthers will travel to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth for the Corsair Classic next Saturday (Apr. 7).
