Brunnette earns All-New England honors in 5k, steeplechase
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The recognition continues to pile up for Plymouth State University junior Sam Brunnette (Newport Center, Vt.), as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its All-Region honorees for the 2018 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field season recently.
Brunnette was named All-New England in both the 5,000 meter run and the 3,000 meter steeplechase, adding to his already impressive resume. The distance runner will look to capture his third All-America selection in seven months as he competes in the steeplechase at the 2018 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships this weekend.
The top-five individuals in each event from each region earned All-Region distinction, in addition to each of the members of the region's top three relay teams. Brunnette was one of 743 athletes representing 192 men's programs to earn the honor.
Brunnette earned the recognition in the 5,000 meter run after his performance at the Silfen Invitational at Connecticut College on Apr. 14. He was first to cross the finish line with a time of 14:41.22, which ended up being the fifth fastest time in New England. He posted the second fastest time in the region in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the MIT Final Qualifying Meet just seven days ago. His time of 9:04.85 shattered his previous school record by nearly 12.5 seconds and qualified him for the NCAA Championship.
