PSC Softball's New England debut postponed

By David Vigliotta

PLYMOUTH, NH -- The Plymouth State College softball New England opener has be delayed because of poor field conditions. The Panthers were scheduled to host New Hampshire College at 3:30 Thursday afternoon, and no announcement has been made for a reschedule.

Plymouth State began its season under first-year head coach Moira Long last week at the Gene Cusic Classic in Ft. Myers, Fla. The Panthers won only twice out of the 10-game stint, beating Endicott 8-2 and Bowdoin 2-1. The young Plymouth squad learned a lot from the competitive round-robin tournament and hopes to clear the cob webs for the start of the New England season.

With only two seniors in the lineup, co-captains Amanda Murphy (Canton, CT) and Kerry Bickford (Belmont, NH), the Panthers are counting on big numbers from underclassmen. Sophomore shortstop Kelly Anderson (Exeter, NH) has picked up her game and leads the Panthers in several categories, including batting average (.414), hits (12), and doubles (2). Junior Sara Wormwood (Rutland, VT) and sophomore Lorienne Fink (Laconia, NH) are both batting .300, with Wormwood leading the team with three home runs and seven RBI. Freshman Kristen Fusick (Windsor Locks, CT) has been a pleasant surprise and is second on the team in batting with a .375 average.

Junior Jen Moulton (Bow, NH) has been PSC's dominant pitcher so far this season. She has worked a team leading 24.2 innings, posting a 2-1 record accompanied by a 1.99 ERA. The Panther righthander also leads the team with 16 strikeouts.

For their first game back in New England, the Panthers will travel to Endicott on Tuesday, Apr. 6, for a non-conference twinbill (2:30 p.m.). The first home game is now scheduled for Monday, Apr. 12, against Fitchburg State (5:00 p.m.).
