PSC Softball sweeps NHC in home opener
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Plymouth State College pounded out 25 hits and scored 27 runs in its softball home opener Thursday evening, sweeping a non-conference doubleheader from New Hampshire College, 15-2 and 12-1.
The Panthers improve to 4-10 overall, while NHC drops to 1-13. Both teams had to overcome wind, rain and cool temperatures at D & M Park.
PSC overcame a 2-0 deficit in the first game, scoring two runs in the first inning, six more in the second, three more in the third, and putting the game away with four in the fourth. The nightcap was over by the second inning, as PSC plated one in the first and put up a nine-spot in the second frame.
Sophomore Kelly Anderson (Exeter, NH) had a strong game for PSC in the opener. She went 4-for-4 with three RBI, a triple and a first-inning home run, the first of her career. Lorienne Fink (Laconia, NH) knocked out three hits, and Sara Wormwood (Rutland, VT), Kerry Bickford (Belmont, NH) and Jennell Carter (Allenstown, NH) each added two hits and two RBI.
Junior Heather Gadourey (No. Billerica, MA) picked up her first win of the season (1-3) with the complete-game, three-strikeout performance. NHC senior Sarah Wolstencroft (Seekonk, MA) took the loss (0-6).
In the second game, Bickford and Carter again had two hits and two RBI for PSC, and Amanda Murphy (Canton, CT) knocked in two runs with a triple. Junior Jen Moulton (Bow, NH) picked up the win (3-2) in relief of Scarlette Mellow (East Hampstead, NH), who worked the first 3.1 innings.
Freshman Amanda Gillespie (Waterboro, ME) had a triple and sophomore Mandy Veilleux (Manchester, NH/Memorial) had a double in the losing effort for the Penwomen. Yolanda Pond (Mercersburg, PA) took the loss.
PSC opens the Little East Conference schedule Saturday (Apr. 10) with a twinbill at Western Connecticut (12:00 p.m.). NHC returns home to host Stony Brook Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
