Top LEC Softball Weekly Honor For Wormwood

PLYMOUTH, NH - The new home run champion for the Plymouth State College softball team has been recognized for her efforts by being named Little East Conference Player of the Week.

Junior Sara Wormwood (Rutland, VT) earned the top weekly honor from the conference after her terrific week for the Panthers. The power-hitting first baseman hit safely in all six games, batting .526 (10-for-19) with one double, one triple, three home runs, eight RBI and eight runs scored.

Last Tuesday's doubleheader with UMass Boston was particularly memorable for Wormwood. She established PSC's school records home runs in a game (2), season (6) and career (10), all in the same afternoon, and finished the day going 4-for-6.

Wormwood is having another excellent season for the Panthers. An All-Little East Conference selection in 1997 and an All-Northeast Region pick in 1998, Wormwood is batting .403 with 27 hits, 19 runs, six home runs and 20 RBI. She is the LEC leader in RBIs per game (0.91), ranks second in homers, tied for third in hits and runs, and tied for fifth in batting average.

The Panthers, 6-16 overall and 2-4 in the Little East heading into a twinbill Tuesday (Apr. 20) at Southern Maine, plays four straight home doubleheaders in six days -- Thursday (Apr. 22) vs. St. Joseph's (5:00 p.m.), Saturday (Apr. 24) against LEC foe UMass Dartmouth (1:00p.m.), Sunday (Apr. 25) vs. St. Anselm (1:00 p.m.), and Tuesday (Apr. 27) against arch-rival Keene State (3:30 p.m.).

PANTHER NOTES: Wormwood is joined on the list of LEC offensive leaders by teammates Kelly Anderson (Exeter, NH) and Kerry Bickford (Belmont, NH). A sophomore SS and lead-off hitter, Anderson is batting .357 with 25 hits, four doubles, three triples, 13 RBI and an on-base percentage of .410. A senior 3B, Bickford is hitting .313 with a team-leading seven doubles. Anderson is among the league-leaders in hits, triples and RBI, and Bickford is second in the LEC in doubles per game (.032) and seventh in RBIs per game (0.64).... Junior Jen Moulton (Bow, NH) is proving to be one of the top pitchers in the LEC. She is eighth in the conference in ERA (2.01), posting a team-leading four wins and ranking third in the league in strikeouts per seven innings (5.48).
