FORT MYERS, Florida - The Plymouth State College softball team split a pair of lopsided games Monday in the annual Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic, falling 10-0 to Colby College but coming back to defeat Babson, 16-2.
The split leaves Plymouth State with a 3-1 record on the Florida trip, with six games left to play. PSC came back from Florida last year with a 2-8 record.
The Panthers were able to muster only three hits against Colby and suffered their first loss of the season. Sophomore pitcher Ashley Thompson (Gorham, NH) suffered the loss for PSC.
The second game was a different story, though, as PSC pounded out 20 hits in five innings of work to rout Babson. Freshmen Nikki Gwynn (Littleton, NH) and Adriene Harvey (Nantucket, Mass.) each went 4-for-4 with three singles and a triple. Senior Sara Wormwood (Rutland, VT) was 3-for-3 with a triple and freshman Sara Morin (Litchfield, NH) also added a triple as PSC finished the game with five three-baggers.
Senior Heather Gadourey (North Billerica, Mass.), PSC's fourth pitcher in as many outings, picked up the win, allowing only two runs and two hits.
