PSC Softball splits two with Bowdoin

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Plymouth State College's softball team pounded out 12 hits in the opening game of a doubleheader Sunday against Bowdoin College, but managed only four hits in the nightcap, and ended up splitting the non-conference twinbill at D&M Park.

The Panthers won the first game, 7-4, but Bowdoin came back to win the second game, 12-1. PSC is now 7-7 on the season, while the Polar Bears are now 7-8.

PSC scored five runs in the third inning of the opener to take a 5-3 lead. Freshmen Adriene Harvey (Nantucket, Mass.) and Nikki Gwynn (Littleton, NH) each drove in two runs in the inning with RBI singles. Gwynn finished the game 3-for-3 with three RBI, while Harvey and senior Sara Wormwood (Rutland, VT) had two hits apiece.

Senior Heather Gadourey (N.Billerica, Mass.) pitched the first four innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, and was credited with the win to improve to 2-1. Classmate Jen Moulton (Bow, NH) worked the final three innings (one hit, one unearned run) to register her second save.

Bowdoin got two hits apiece in the opener from junior Megan Wardrop (Concord, NH), senior Kristen Marshall (Danvers, Mass.) and freshman Jenn Laraia (Torrington, Conn.). Junior pitcher Julie Jussaume (East Douglas, Mass.) went the distance and was tagged with the loss (1-5).

The Polar Bears scored 12 runs on 11 hits in the nightcap, crossing the plate seven times in the seventh inning to break it open. Sophomore Katie Sheridan (Marblehead, Mass.) went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI, and classmate Kristie Miller (North Canaan, Conn.) knocked in three runs, two coming on a seventh inning double. Marshall added two hits and an RBI to make a winner out of sophomore Gina Laugelli (Long Branch, NJ), who went the distance to improve to 5-0.

Gwynn drove in PSC's only run in the nightcap with a first-inning single, but the Panther bats fell silent. Freshman Ashley Thompson (Gorham, NH) couldn't get out of the second inning, and took the loss to drop to 0-2.

PSC returns to action Wednesday at D&M Park, hosting Bates in a 3 p.m. non-conference twinbill. Bowdoin is back in action next Saturday at Amherst (1 p.m.).
