PSC Softball posts sweep of UMB
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Plymouth State College's softball team earned a spot in this week's Little East Conference Tournament with a doubleheader sweep over UMass Boston Saturday at D & M Park.
The Panthers won the opener, 8-0, and came back to win the nightcap, 12-1. Both games were reduced to five innings due to the eight-run rule. PSC improves to 14-18 overall and 5-7 in the LEC, while UMB falls to 8-17 and 0-12.
Plymouth State, which concludes the regular season Sunday (4/30) at home with a make-up twinbill against Rhode Island College, has clinched the sixth and final LEC play-off berth. The Panthers will open the tournament Tuesday at the third-seeded school, which is still TBA.
Senior Jen Moulton (Bow, NH) tossed a one-hit shutout for PSC in the opener to improve her record to 7-5. She allowed only a first-inning single and a fourth inning walk, while striking out five to improve her school-record career total to 147. UMB freshman Trisha Cole took the loss.
Senior Sara Wormwood (Rutland, VT) and freshman Steph Marsland (Cumberland, RI) provided the offense for PSC, each recording three hits. Wormwood drove in four runs, and Marsland and junior Kelly Anderson (Exeter, NH) each knocked in a pair.
Freshman Lyndsy Patten (Ellsworth, Maine) went the distance for PSC in the nightcap, allowing a run on three hits to improve her record to 3-7. The Panthers got all the runs they would need with an eight-spot in the first inning. Wormwood, freshman Christina Dell (Porter Corners, NY) and Lorienne Fink (Laconia, NH) each had RBI hits in the inning, and sophomore Kristen Fusick (Windsor Locks, Conn.) knocked in three with a bases-clearing double.
The Panthers put the game away with four more runs in the third inning. Marsland and freshman Adriene Harvey (Nantucket, Mass.) each produced RBI singles, and Dell drove in two more with her second double of the day.
