PSC drops to 2-4 on Florida Trip
FORT MYERS, Florida - With losses in its last three games, the Plymouth State College softball team dropped to 2-4 this week in the annual Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.
The Panthers defeated Massachusetts College in Tuesday's first game, 5-4, to get off to a 2-1 start in the tournament, but lost to Grand View College the same day, 14-3, to even its mark at 2-2. PSC then dropped both ends of Wednesday's make-up doubleheader (from Monday's rainouts), falling 4-1 to Smith College and 7-1 to Pine Manor College.
Senior Kelly Anderson (Exeter, N.H.) and freshman Kristin Balles (Bedford, N.H./West H.S.) led the Panthers in the win over Mass. College. Anderson went 3-for-3 at the plate, and Balles went 2-for-2, including a first inning lead-off home run. Balles was also the winning pitcher, registering her first career victory (1-0).
The Panther bats were quiet in Wednesday's make-up games, managing only four hits in the two contests. Freshman pitcher Jes Leary (Farmington, N.H.) pitched well but took the loss (1-1) against Smith, and sophomore Lyndsy Patten (Ellsworth, Maine) was the losing pitcher against Pine Manor to fall to 0-3.
Plymouth State has four games remaining on the trip, facing Amherst and Buffalo on Thursday and Dana (Neb.) and Bethel (Minn.) on Friday.
