NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Plymouth State College and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth split a Little East Conference softball doubleheader Sunday, the Panthers winning the opener, 5-4, and the Corsairs coming back to capture the nightcap, 6-4.
The twinbill was rescheduled from Saturday, when the games were wiped out by soggy field conditions. With the verdict, PSC is now 3-9 overall and 1-1 in conference play, while UMD is 5-5-1 and 1-1.
PSC scored all five runs in the fourth inning of the opener, while UMD counted single runs in the first, second, third and seventh innings. Senior Kelly Anderson (Exeter, N.H.) had the big hit for PSC in the fourth with a two-run double. Sophomore Steph Marsland (Cumberland, R.I.) and senior Steph Ruel (Biddeford, Maine) also added RBI hits for the Panthers. Sophomore Lyndsy Patten (Ellsworth, Maine) pitched the whole game for the Panthers to pick up her first win of the season (1-5).
The Panthers outhit the Corsairs 10-8 in the second game, but could not pull out the win. UMD led 4-0 after two innings and 6-2 through six before PSC staged a seventh inning rally with a pair of runs, but the Corsairs held on. Junior Kristen Fusick (Windsor Locks, Conn.) led the Panther offense, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Sophomore Adriene Harvey (Nantucket, Mass.) was 2-for-4 with an RBI and classmate Bo Dell (Porter Corners, N.Y.) also went 2-for-4. Sophomore Nikki Gwynn (Littleton, N.H.) smacked a double and freshman Mo Cancellieri (Stoughton, Mass.) drove in a run. Freshman Jes Leary (Farmington, N.H.) took the loss to fall to 2-3.
PSC's non-conference doubleheader scheduled for Wednesday (Apr. 4) at Bates has been postponed due to winter-like conditions in Northern New England. Those conditions have also put in jeopardy PSC's scheduled home opener next Saturday (Apr. 7) against LEC foe Eastern Connecticut.
