PSC takes two from N.H. College
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Playing its final home games of the season, Plymouth State College swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from New Hampshire College Thursday afternoon at D & M Park, 4-2 and 3-0.
The victories improve PSC to 8-20 overall, while NHC drops to 7-26.
PSC came from behind to win the opener, as the Penwomen took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on back-to-back RBI singles by senior Mandy Veilleux (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) and sophomore Trisha Robinson (Plaistow, N.H.). PSC answered with a pair in the bottom half of the inning on an infield error and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch by senior Steph Ruel (Biddeford, Maine).
The Panthers then plated the winning runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI single by senior Abby Russell (Newfane, Vt.). Sophomore Lyndsy Patten (Ellsworth, Maine) went the distance for PSC to pick up the win (2-11), while sophomore Andrea Wiggins (Waterbury, Conn.) took the loss (2-11) for NHC.
PSC freshman Jes Leary (Farmington, N.H.) tossed a two-hitter at the Penwomen in the nightcap, fanning three to record her second shutout of the season and improve her record to 5-8.
Plymouth State got the game-winning run in the first inning of the nightcap on a walk by junior Kristen Fusick (Windsor Locks, Conn.) and an RBI triple by senior Kelly Anderson (Exeter, N.H.). The Panthers added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth, one coming home on an RBI single by freshman Michelle Knox (Gilmanton, N.H.). Sophomore Jen Dupuis (Salem, N.H.) took the loss.
PSC wraps up the 2001 season Saturday (Apr. 28) with a Little East Conference doubleheader at UMass Boston (1 p.m.). NHC returns to action Friday (Apr. 27) with a single make-up game at Bentley (4 p.m.)
