ECAC New England honor for Jeffs
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - A pair of Plymouth State College freshman student-athletes who were selected Little East Conference Players of the Week in their respective sports have also been recognized by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) as Division III New England Players of the Week.
Panther softball pitcher Kim Jeffs (Stoughton, Mass.) and women's lacrosse goalie Melissa Gravilla (Andover, N.H.) were honored by the ECAC, Jeffs as Pitcher of the Week and Gravilla as Goalie of the Week. It is the second time this season that Jeffs has received the honor, while Gravilla was recognized for the first time.
In seven appearances last week, Jeffs went 7-0 with seven complete-games, four shutouts and a dazzling 0.16 earned run average. She pitched 45 innings and allowed just 18 hits, three runs (one earned) and one walk while striking out 72. She struck out 11 or more batters in five of her seven outings, and surpassed the PSC season records for wins (16), complete games (21), and shutouts (11). Jeffs is ranked among the NCAA Division III national leaders in strikeouts, earned run average and wins.
Gravilla, who has twice been the Little East Defensive Player of the Week and once was the LEC's Rookie of the Week, registered a 7.50 goals against average and a .667 saves percentage in two appearances last week. She stopped 15 of 20 shots in a win over Keene State, and made 15 saves on 30 shots in a 10-9 setback to Bowdoin. Gravilla leads the LEC in both goals against (7.26) and saves percentage (.663), helping PSC lead the conference in team defense (allowing only 6.08 goals per game).
Plymouth State is having strong spring seasons in both softball in women's lacrosse, and both teams have sights set on securing a post-season berth. The softball team is 20-10-2 under coach Harry Blood heading into Thursday's doubleheader at Southern New Hampshire University, matching the school record for wins in a season, while the women's lacrosse team under coach Wynne Lobel had a 10-game winning streak earlier this year and is 11-2 overall with one game left in the regular season.
