Panthers take one from NEC

HENNIKER, N.H. - Senior Adriene Harvey (Nantucket, Mass.) smacked a three-run double in the first inning and sophomore Kim Jeffs (Stoughton, Mass.) struck out 13 batters Thursday, leading Plymouth State College's softball team to a 6-1 victory over New England College in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader.

The win was PSC's eighth in a row, improving the Panthers to 12-1 overall, while NEC is now 7-5. The second game of the twinbill was cancelled due to the cold and blustery weather.

Harvey's bases-clearing double in the opening frame came after NEC walked the first three Panther batters. Sophomore Annie Metz (North Chelmsford, Mass.) followed with a double to drive in Harvey to put PSC up 4-0. The Panthers plated another run in the first inning and added another in the sixth.

Jeffs earned the win to improve her record to 10-1, allowing only five hits and one walk while fanning 13. The only damage came in the second inning when NEC's Lindsey Inman hit her second home run of the season over the center field fence.

PSC, which is ranked #2 in New England, is scheduled to return to action Saturday with a Little East Conference doubleheader at Eastern Connecticut (1:00 p.m.). The games were originally scheduled to be played in Plymouth, but were moved to ECSU because of weather and field conditions.
