PSU Softball wins first two games of season
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Plymouth State University softball team opened the season with a pair of victories Sunday over St. Thomas University (Fla.) and Fredonia State (N.Y.) in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.
The Panthers registered a 5-0 victory over St. Thomas in the first game, and came back with a 3-2 come-from-behind verdict over Fredonia State in the nightcap. The outcomes marked the first career victories for PSU head coach Bruce Addison. St. Thomas drops to 10-15-1 and Fredonia is now 3-3.
Junior All-America pitcher Kim Jeffs (Stoughton, Mass.) registered the win in both games for PSU. She went the distance in the opener, allowing only three hits while striking out eight. Jeffs worked two-and-two-thirds scoreless innings in the second contest, fanning five to improve to 2-0.
Junior Niki Ramback (Bethlehem, N.H.) and senior Maria Curran (Scarborough, Maine) each had three hits to pace the Panther offense against St. Thomas. Curran smacked a ground-rule double to spark a four-run third inning that provided Jeffs all the runs she needed. Senior Kristin Balles (Bedford, N.H./West) registered three hits in the second game, including a double, and Ramback added a game-winning single in the fifth inning as PSU overcame a 2-0 deficit with one run in the fourth inning and two in the fifth.
PSU continues competition in the Gene Cusic Classic with two games Monday against Union (N.Y.) at 9 a.m. and Albright (Pa.) at 1:00 p.m.
