Panther Softball drops pair in Florida

FORT MYERS, Fla. - After opening the season with a pair of victories, Plymouth State University suffered two softball losses Monday in the annual Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

PSU went to extra innings in the first game, but Union College (N.Y.) scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull out a 3-2 victory. The Panthers came right back to face Albright College (Pa.) in the second game and was handed a 7-2 defeat. PSU is now 2-2 on the season, while Albright is 3-4 and Union is 4-0.

The Panthers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning against Union, but the Dutchwomen battled back to force extra innings with a run in the fourth and a solo home run in the sixth by sophomore Julie Gawronski. Freshman Colleen White drove in the winning run with a two-out single in the eighth to give Union the win and hand PSU junior Kim Jeffs (Stoughton, Mass.) her first loss of the season. Jeffs allowed only six hits while striking out 11 but fell to 2-1.

Albright took a 5-0 lead after three innings in PSU's second game, scoring once in the first and third innings and three times in the second. It was 7-0 before PSU got on the board with two runs in the fifth inning. Meredith Mayes led the offense for the winners, smacking a home run and a ground-rule double.

Sophomore Rose Eaton (Concord, N.H.) took the loss in her first appearance of the season, while senior Kristin Balles (Bedford, N.H./West) had three singles to account for three of PSU's four hits.

PSU continues competition in the Gene Cusic Classic with two games Tuesday against Bethel (Minn.) at 11 a.m. and Kalamazoo (Mich.) at 1:00 p.m.
