Panther Softball drops final two games on Florida trip
FT. MYERS, Fla. - The Plymouth State University softball team dropped its final two games in the Gene Cusic Classic Friday, finishing its spring trip with a 5-6 record with three of the six setbacks coming by one run.
The Panthers were edged by Bowdoin College in Friday's opener, 3-2, and by the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in the second game, 3-1. Bowdoin improved its record to 9-5, and UWW is now 9-3.
Bowdoin took a 3-0 lead with two runs in the first inning and one in the third off PSU freshman starter Nicole Lovejoy (Poland, Maine). The Panthers came back with a pair of runs in the fifth inning, but left the bases loaded to end the inning. Junior Sara Madden (Londonderry, N.H.) started the rally with a one-out single, and classmates Anna Godard (Florence, Mass.) and Michelle Dubois (Auburn, Maine) contributed key hits in the inning.
UWW also took a 3-0 advantage over the Panthers in the third inning off PSU sophomore starter Rose Eaton (Concord, N.H.). The only run the offense could muster was in the sixth inning when senior Kristin Balles (Bedford, N.H./West) singled, junior Kim Jeffs (Stoughton, Mass.) walked, junior Niki Ramback (Bethlehem, N.H.) singled, and with the bases loaded, Balles came home on a passed ball.
PSU returns to New England for a string of home games at D&M Park, weather and field conditions permitting. The Panthers are slated to host Bowdoin on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) and New England College Thursday (4:00 p.m.) in non-conference doubleheaders, followed by the Little East Conference opening twinbill vs. UMass Dartmouth on Saturday (1:00 p.m.).
