PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Plymouth State University's softball team swept a Little East Conference doubleheader for the second time in as many days Sunday afternoon at D&M Park, defeating the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 7-1 and 5-2, in the regular season finale for both schools.
The Panthers, who also took two from UMass Boston on Saturday, wraps up the regular season with a 15-14 overall record, and a 7-7 conference mark. UMD completes its season at 2-16 overall and 1-13 in LEC play.
PSU also finishes sixth in the LEC and qualifies for the six-team, double-elimination conference tournament, which will be held Thursday through Saturday at regular-season champion Keene State College. The sixth-seeded Panthers will meet third-seeded Western Connecticut Thursday at 12 noon in a first-round game. The LEC Tournament Champion will receive an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament.
PSU junior pitcher Kim Jeffs (Stoughton, Mass.) earned the victory in both ends of Sunday's twinbill, improving her record to 10-8. She worked the first five innings of the opener, allowing three hits and one run and striking out six before giving way to sophomore Rose Eaton (Concord, N.H.), who pitched two perfect innings of relief. Jeffs went the distance in the nightcap, giving up two runs on eight hits while fanning nine.
Sophomore Amanda Leal (New Bedford, Mass.) and junior Cheryl Boltruczyk (Sutton, Mass.) each pitched in both games for the Corsairs, with Leal starting and taking the loss in the opener and Boltruczyk doing the same in the nightcap.
Senior Michelle Knox (Gilmanton, N.H.) led the PSU hitters in the first game, cracking a double and a triple, scoring two runs and knocking in a pair. Junior Sara Madden (Londonderry, N.H.) added a two-run single, and junior Anna Godard (Florence, Mass.) brought home a run with a sacrifice fly.
The Corsairs got their only run in the opener in the fourth inning when freshman Shannon Allberry (Attleboro, Mass.) doubled and scored on a single by junior Allison Letendre (Westport, Mass.).
Senior Krissy Crego (Rochester, N.Y.) had the big hit for PSU in the nightcap with her first home run of the season. Senior Maria Curran (Scarborough, Maine) and Jeffs collected two hits and one RBI apiece, and Knox chipped in with a sacrifice fly.
UMD got to Jeffs in the fifth inning when sophomore Amanda Tavares (Dartmouth, Mass.) and Allberry singled and both came around to score on a triple by Letendre.
Plymouth State split the doubleheader this season with its LEC first-round opponent, Western Conn., on Apr. 10 in Danbury, Conn. Western won the opener 3-1, but PSU came back to take the nightcap, 6-3.
