PSU earns split of softball double dip in Florida
FORT MYERS, Fla. - For the second straight day, the Plymouth State University softball team split a pair of games in the annual Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic Monday, edging Albright College (Pa.) in the nightcap, 2-1, after falling to Bethel University (Minn.) in the first game, 9-1.
Panther senior Kim Jeffs (Stoughton, Mass.) recorded her first victory of the season in the nightcap, allowing only five hits and a run while striking out nine. PSU collected single runs in the second and third inning in support of Jeffs, who improved to 1-1. Senior Jess Rousselle (Deerfield, N.H.) and freshmen Ashley Fleming (Farmington, Conn.) and Kristi Curry (Nottingham, N.H./Dover) collected key hits for the Panthers in the win.
Sophomore Colleen Courtney (Norwood, Mass.) had two of PSU's three hits and scored the only run in the loss to Bethel, while Rousselle had the other hit. The Royals scored four runs (two earned) in the third inning off PSU starter Rose Eaton (Concord, N.H.), who took the loss and fell to 1-1.
PSU is now 2-2 on the season, while Bethel is also 2-2 and Albright is 4-4. The Panthers continue action in Florida with two games Tuesday morning, meeting Middlebury College at 9:00 a.m. and Colby College at 11:00 a.m.
