WestConn earns sweep over Plymouth State Softball
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Western Connecticut State University softball pitchers Shelby Slie (Seymour, Conn.) and Kristy Swanson (Danbury, Conn.) tossed back-to-back two-hitters Saturday afternoon to lead the Colonials to a Little East Conference sweep of Plymouth State University, 1-0 and 6-1, at D&M Park.
WestConn, the defending LEC champions, remained unbeaten in conference play this season (4-0), improving to 13-6 overall. PSU had its four-game winning streak stopped and fell to 9-13 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
Slie limited the Panthers to a pair of hits in the opener, a fifth-inning single by senior Anna Godard (Florence, Mass.) and a sixth-inning slap single by senior Jess Rousselle (Deerfield, N.H.). Slie struck out three and did not walk a batter, improving her record to 7-1.
The Colonials scored the only run of the game in the top of the first inning when sophomore Meg Cirigliano (Newington, Conn.) led off with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Kristen Lugovich (West Haven, Conn.), and scored on a wild pitch.
PSU senior Kim Jeffs (Stoughton, Mass.), who allowed only four hits and the one run while striking out 15, was the tough-luck losing pitcher.
The WestConn bats registered 13 hits off PSU starter Rose Eaton (Concord, N.H.) in the second game, scoring single runs in the first and third innings and adding two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings. Lugovich led the way, going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Junior Holly Szymanski (Wallingford, Conn.) and freshman Jessica Watts (Milford, Conn.) also had two hits apiece, and senior Brooke Morris (Stamford, Conn.) added a pair of RBI.
Swanson took a no-hitter into the seventh inning for WestConn, but PSU scored a run when freshman Lisa Pelosi (Reading, Mass.) led off with a walk, classmate Devin Caswell (Wilton, N.H.) singled up the middle, and one out later, Pelosi scored on an infield out. Sophomore Colleen Courtney (Norwood, Mass.) followed with another single, freshman Kara Marvelli (Franconia, N.H.) walked to load the bases, but Eaton popped out to end the game.
Plymouth State returns to action Tuesday with an LEC twinbill at Keene State (3:30 p.m.). WestConn returns home to host Keene State in a make-up doubleheader Sunday (Apr. 17) at 2:00 p.m.
