PSU Softball splits Little East doubleheader with Southern Maine

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Plymouth State University senior Kim Jeffs (Stoughton, Mass.) celebrated Senior Day Tuesday afternoon with a one-hit shutout over the University of Southern Maine, along with her first run batted in of the season, helping the Panthers earn a split of the Little East Conference softball doubleheader at D&M Park.

The Huskies captured the first game, 5-0, behind the pitching of senior Melissa Henderson (Newburyport, Mass.), who tossed a three-hit shutout while striking out eight.  Jeffs was just as impressive in the nightcap, allowing only a single while striking out 11 to lift the Panthers to a 6-0 victory.  Southern Maine is now 17-14-1 overall and 5-5 in the Little East, while PSU is now 11-15 overall and 3-7 in conference play.

Senior Jess Rousselle (Deerfield, N.H.) went 3-for-3 in the opener for PSU, but no one else could get a hit off Henderson, who improved to 13-7 with the win.  Sophomore Christen LaChapelle (Farmingdale, Maine) collected three hits, including a double, and scored two runs to lead the Husky offense.  Juniors Katie Mainville (Cooper Mills, Maine), Caterina Riitano (Sangerville, Maine) and Kristin McGovern (Gorham, Maine) also added two hits apiece for the Huskies.

A single to center in the fifth inning by freshman Laura Pratt (Greene, Maine) was the only hit in the nightcap allowed by Jeffs, who surrendered one hit or less for the 17th time in her career (13 one-hitters, four no-hitters).  She also recorded her fourth shutout of the season and the 36th of her career, which is tied for 11th on the all-time Division III list.

Freshman Kristi Curry (Nottingham, N.H.) led the Panther hitters in the nightcap, going 2-for-3 with three RBI.  She cracked a two-run single in the third inning and added an RBI single in the fourth.  Jeffs also added a run-scoring single in the third inning, and another run scored on a sacrifice bunt by junior Rose Eaton (Concord, N.H.)

Plymouth State wraps up the regular season with LEC doubleheaders Friday at LEC-leading Rhode Island College (3:30 p.m.) and Saturday at UMass Boston (2:30 p.m.).  Southern Maine has four doubleheaders remaining in its regular season, beginning Thursday with a non-conference home twinbill against Bowdoin (3:30 p.m.)
