PSU Softball takes two from UMass Boston

BOSTON, Mass. - Plymouth State University's softball team scored 27 runs on 26 hits Saturday afternoon en route to sweeping a rainy Little East Conference doubleheader from the University of Massachusetts Boston, 13-3 and 14-2.  Both games were stopped after five innings due to the LEC mercy rule.

PSU led 4-0 after two innings of the opener, then put the game away with two runs in the fourth inning and seven runs in the fifth.  Senior Jess Rousselle (Deerfield, N.H.) recorded two hits, including a home run, and four RBI, while freshman Danielle Normand (Rumford, R.I.) collected three hits and three RBI to lead the PSU offense.  Senior Michelle Dubois (Auburn, Maine) and freshman Kristi Curry (Nottingham, N.H.) also had two hits apiece for the Panthers, and Curry knocked in a pair.

Junior Rose Eaton (Concord, N.H.) pitched the first four innings for PSU and earned the win, evening her mark at 6-6.  Freshman Jen Dupont (Pembroke, Mass.) worked the final inning in her first pitching appearance of the season.

The Panthers put the second game away early, scoring four runs in the second inning and tacking on nine more in the third.  Senior Anna Godard (Florence, Mass.) led the way for PSU in the nightcap, collecting three hits, including a double.  Freshmen Normand, Ashley Fleming (Farmington, Conn.) and Lori Pettengill (Holderness, N.H.) each added two hits for the winners.

Senior Kim Jeffs (Stoughton, Mass.) went the distance for PSU in the second game, allowing six hits and two runs (one earned) and improving her season record to 8-10.

PSU concludes the regular season at 14-16 overall and 6-8 in the Little East.  The Panthers have clinched a spot in next week's LEC Tournament, but must wait until the complete regular season LEC schedule has been completed to learn their seed.  UMB, 6-24 overall and 0-12 in conference play, wraps up its season Sunday with two LEC games at Western Connecticut (1:00 p.m.)
