Plymouth State Softball drops opening pair in Florida
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Plymouth State University softball team dropped their first two games of the season Sunday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic, falling to Albright College, 10-1, in the opener, and to the College of Wooster, 2-0, in the nightcap.
The first game lasted only five innings, as Albright turned a 2-1 game into a rout with an eight-run third inning. The lone highlight for Plymouth State came in the top of the second inning when, down 1-0, junior Cathy Aimola (Wellesley, Mass.) singled and came around to score on a double by freshman Leslie Sarno (Durham, N.H.). Freshman Heather Bartolo (Derry, N.H.) also had a double in the game, but those were the only Panther hits.
PSU freshman Courtney McFarland (Hampstead, N.H.) and Wooster freshman Katie Pifer (Meadville, Pa.) were locked in a scoreless pitching duel through five innings in the second game. Wooster senior Kelly Robinson (North Olmsted, Ohio) broke the deadlock with a dramatic two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Bartolo and sophomore Lori Pettengill (Holderness, N.H.) each had two hits as the Panthers recorded eight hits off Pifer. PSU loaded the bases with only one out in the top of the seventh but couldn't push a run across the plate.
The Panthers will look to break into the win column Monday with games against Trinity College and Babson College.
