PSU Softball drops two close games in Florida
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Plymouth State University softball team dropped a pair of close games Monday in Florida at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic, falling to Trinity College, 1-0, in the opener, and Babson College, 4-1, in the nightcap.
The Panthers are still looking for their first win after four games. The PSU offense has struggled, scoring only two runs in the four outings. Trinity is now 4-0 and Babson is 3-1.
Senior Rose Eaton (Concord, N.H.) had a strong pitching performance for PSU against Trinity, but suffered a tough-luck defeat. She threw shutout ball for five innings, and allowed only one run on three hits and two walks in the game. Trinity scored the only run of the contest in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double by sophomore Beth Gostanian (Windham, N.H.)
Trinity sophomore pitcher Brittany Alvino (Warren, N.J.) limited the Panthers to three hits, a double by freshman Leanne Barry (Auburn, N.H./Pinkerton) and singles by freshman Heather Bartolo (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton) and sophomore Ashley Fleming (Farmington, Conn.)
PSU fell behind Babson 3-0 before getting on the board in the fourth inning. Bartolo had one of her two singles, and came around to score on a hit by sophomore Kristi Curry (Nottingham, N.H./Dover).
That was all the offense PSU could muster, though, off Babson senior Meghan Gaskell (Uxbridge, Mass.), who picked up her first win of the season and 32nd of her career. Gaskell also led the Beavers offense with two hits and two RBI. Freshman Lisa Illinger (Hanover, Conn.) pitched into the sixth inning for the Panthers but took the loss.
The Panthers will look to break into the win column Tuesday with games against Bethel College (Minn.) and Bowdoin College.
