PLYMOUTH, N.H. - A freshman outfielder on the Plymouth State University softball team was honored by the Little East Conference Monday for her performance in four Panther games last week.
Freshman Leanne Barry (Auburn, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) was named LEC Softball Rookie of the Week. She is the first PSU player to be honored by the Little East this spring.
A freshman left fielder and lead-off hitter, Barry (left) was one of the bright spots in a 1-4 week for the Panthers. She hit safely in all four games she played in, batting.467 (7-for-15) with a double, two triples, two RBI and four runs scored. She had two hits in both ends of the LEC doubleheader against UMass Dartmouth, including a double and two runs scored in the 7-6 extra-inning win in the nightcap.
Barry is off to a strong start to her rookie campaign. She tops the team in batting average (.333) and runs scored (6) and shares the Panther lead in hits (12), doubles (2) and triples (2).
The Panthers, who have seven freshmen and seven sophomores on the roster of 18, split their first two LEC games of the season last Saturday at UMD but have struggled to a 3-12 overall record. The Panthers have a pair of road doubleheaders slated for this week, weather permitting - a non-conference pair Wednesday at Fitchburg State (4:00 p.m.) and an LEC twinbill Saturday at Eastern Connecticut (1:00 p.m.) PSU has played its first 15 games away from Plymouth, and has eight more scheduled before the home opener on Apr. 18.
