PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Freshman Courtney MacFarland (Hampstead, N.H./Pinkerton) and senior Rose Eaton (Concord, N.H.) tossed back-to-back two-hit shutouts Thursday afternoon to lead the Plymouth State University softball team to a sweep of a non-conference doubleheader against Lyndon State College, 5-0 and 4-0, at D&M Park.
The Panthers pick up their first doubleheader sweep of the season, stopping a four-game losing streak and improving to 6-23 overall. PSU snapped Lyndon State's 20-game winning streak, as the Hornets, an NAIA school, dropped to 24-9 overall.
MacFarland struck out a career-high eight batters to lead PSU to victory in the opener. She allowed only two singles and a walk as no LSC runner advanced beyond second base. Eaton was equally as strong in the nightcap, also surrendering just two hits and a walk while striking out a season-high 10 batters, and like MacFarland, did not allow a runner past second base.
Sophomore Devin Caswell (Wilton, N.H.) did the damage for the PSU offense in the opener, going 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Freshmen Rachel Pothier (Reading, Mass.) and Heather Bartolo (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton) and Eaton also collected two hits in the first game for the winners.
Sophomore Kristi Curry (Nottingham, N.H.), freshman Kristen Abbott (Londonderry, N.H.) and sophomore Lori Pettengill (Holderness, N.H.) strung together singles in the fourth inning of the nightcap to give PSU a 1-0 lead. The Panthers added three insurance runs in the last of the sixth as freshman Leslie Sarno (Durham, N.H.) knocked in a run with a single and Pothier followed with a two-run single.
PSU wraps up the regular season this weekend with a pair of Little East Conference doubleheaders - Saturday at D&M Park in the home finale against UMass Boston (1:00 p.m.) and Sunday in a make-up twin bill at Eastern Connecticut (2:00 p.m.)
