PSU Softball wraps up Florida trip with fourth straight split

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Plymouth State University's softball team wrapped up its Florida trip Friday with a win and a loss, the fourth straight time this week the Panthers have split two games.

The Panthers rebounded from a 10-1 defeat to Buffalo State College in Friday's first game to blank SUNY New Paltz, 1-0, in the second contest. In all four splits this week, PSU dropped the opener but rebounded to take the nightcap. The Panthers returns to New England with a 5-6 overall record.

PSU managed only one run and five hits in the opener against Buffalo State. The highlight was provided by freshman Becca DiPietro (Portsmouth, N.H.), who cracked a solo home run, the first of her career. Junior Lori Pettengill (Holderness, N.H.) also had two hits for the Panthers.

The Bengals scored three runs in the first inning, added one in the second, and put the game away with four runs in the fourth frame. The game was ended after five innings. Junior Jenna Schwartzmeyer (Williamsville, N.Y.) led the parade for Buffalo State with two hits and three RBI.

Plymouth State and New Paltz were locked in a scoreless tie when junior Danielle Normand (Rumford, R.I./East Providence) led off the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run, her second of the week. The Hawks put two runners on with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but sophomore Courtney MacFarland (Hampstead, N.H./Pinkerton) came on to get the final two outs to save the win for freshman Kat Roland (Norton, Mass./Fontbonne Academy), who allowed only two hits and struck our four in six and one-third innings.

PSU returns to New England and opens Little East Conference play with a doubleheader at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Saturday, March 31, at 1:00 p.m.
