PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Rhode Island College extended its school-record softball winning streak to 21 games Saturday afternoon, sweeping a Little East Conference doubleheader from Plymouth State University, 10-0 and 4-1.
The Anchorwomen, ranked #14 in the latest Division III national poll, improved to 26-2 overall and 6-0 in the LEC, while PSU dipped below the .500 mark at 11-12 overall, 3-3 in conference play.
RIC scored six runs in the third inning to go ahead 7-0, and then put the game away with three runs in the fourth inning. PSU managed just two hits, as RIC senior record-setting pitcher Nicole Riley (North Providence, R.I.) struck out nine Panther batters in four innings. The game was stopped after five innings due to the mercy rule.
The Anchorwomen scored single runs in the first two innings of the nightcap. PSU got on the board in the top of the sixth inning when freshman Sammi Romano (Kingston, N.H./Sanborn Reg.) doubled, went to third on a single by classmate Becca DiPietro (Portsmouth, R.I.), and came home on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Rachel Pothier (Reading, Mass.). RIC answered in the last of the sixth with two runs, and the Riley held off the Panthers in the seventh.
Plymouth State will finally play its home opener on Tuesday, hosting Southern Maine in an LEC doubleheader at D&M Park (4:00 p.m.) RIC plays an LEC make-up doubleheader Sunday against Keene State (12:00 p.m.)
