PSU Softball sweeps Little East pair from UMass Boston

BOSTON, Mass. - The Plymouth State University softball team got back on the winning track Saturday afternoon, sweeping a Little East Conference doubleheader from the University of Massachusetts Boston, 8-5 and 6-4, at the Clark Athletic Center Softball Field. PSU stopped a seven-game losing skid, improving to 13-16 overall and 5-7 in conference play, while UMB falls to 7-17 overall and 1-13 in the LEC.

The Panthers rallied from behind in both games to pull out the victories. PSU was down 4-2 after four innings in the opener before scoring three runs in the fifth inning, two in the sixth and adding an insurance run in the seventh. Plymouth State trailed 2-1 after four innings in the nightcap but pulled out the win with five runs in the fifth inning. The second game was halted in the top of the sixth inning because of rain.

PSU scored its eight runs on seven hits in the opener. Junior Danielle Normand (Rumford, R.I.) led the way with two doubles and four RBI, cracking two-run doubles in the first and fifth innings. Sophomore Heather Bartolo (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton) also collected two hits and scored two runs. Freshman Kay LaBrie (Somersworth, N.H.) reaches base four times on three walks and a double, and sophomore Leanne Barry (Auburn, N.H.) chipped in with two walks, an RBI single and two runs scored.

The Panthers used three pitchers in the opening-game win; sophomore Courtney MacFarland (Hampstead, N.H./Pinkerton) started, freshman Ashley Pinkham (Center Barnstead, N.H.) picked up her first career win in relief, and freshman Kat Roland (Norton, Mass.) came on to hold off the Beacons and earn a save.

Junior Shauna Isham (Auburn, N.H./Pinkerton) keyed PSU's five-run rally in the fifth inning of the nightcap with a three-run double, and freshman Beth Moretti (Woonsocket, R.I.) followed with an RBI single. Moretti collected three of PSU's five hits in the game, and drove in two runs, and Roland went the distance in the circle to pick up the win.

PSU wraps up the regular season Sunday with a home doubleheader against Western Connecticut (12:00 p.m.)
