PSU Softball splits twinbill at Framingham State

Framingham, Mass. - The Plymouth State University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Framingham State College Thursday afternoon, taking a 1-0 victory in the opener but falling in the nightcap, 5-4.  PSU improves to 17-9, while the Rams are now 10-19.

The Panthers scored an unearned run in the first inning of game one as sophomore Kay LaBrie (Somersworth, N.H.) doubled to left, advance to third on a ground out and counted the only run of the game on a passed ball.  LaBrie finished the game 3-for-3 with a double, accounting for three of PSU's four hits.

Sophomore Kat Roland (Norton, Mass.) went the distance for the Panthers, allowing only four Ram hits while striking out 12.  Junior Katelyn Pacheco (New Bedford, Mass.) was outstanding on the hill for the Rams despite picking up the loss.  Pacheco allowed one unearned run while striking out 10.

The Rams scored three runs in the first of the second game to take the lead for good.  After the Panthers cut the Rams lead to one with two runs in the fourth inning, the Rams responded with two runs of their own to push the lead back to 5-2.  The Panthers would score single runs in the fifth and seventh, but senior Kelly Knox (Framingham, Mass.) got key outs when she needed them to earn the win.

Senior Danielle Normand (Rumford, R.I.) put the Panthers on the board with an RBI double in the fourth inning, and she came around to score on a Framingham throwing error.  Freshman Kortney Nedeau (Kennebunk, Maine) added a two-out, RBI double in the fifth inning and a two-out, run scoring single in the seventh inning.  Senior Lori Pettengill (Holderness, N.H.) also had two hits and scored a run for PSU.

After 26 games away from home, PSU finally plays its first home games of the season this Saturday, hosting def ending Little East Conference champion Rhode Island College in a twinbill at D&M Park (1:00 p.m.)  The Rams return to action Saturday as they travel to Massachusetts Maritime Academy for a noon start.
