Two PSU Softball players earn All-LEC honors
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Two of the standouts on the Plymouth State University softball team were honored Wednesday with spots on the Little East Conference All-Star Team for the 2008 season.
Sophomore Kat Roland (Norton, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) and freshman Andrea Pydynkowski (Danvers, Mass.) were PSU's choices to the All-LEC Second Team, as voted by the league's head coaches. They were two of the key players that helped the Panthers improve from 12 wins last season to 25 victories this year.
Roland and Pydynkowski will lead the Panthers in action this week in the ECAC New England Tournament, PSU's first post-season appearance in five years. The Panthers are the #5 seed and are playing at #4 seed Western New England College Wednesday (May 7) in a first-round game.
A sophomore right-handed pitcher, Roland (right) has posted a 12-6 record this spring with a 2.42 earned run average and five shutouts. She struck out 134 batters in 115 innings, and ranked fifth in the LEC in ERA and third in strikeouts. The 12 wins are the fourth-most in a season for a PSU pitcher in the program's history.
A freshman outfielder, Pydynkowski (left) started 36 games for the Panthers and posted a .303 batting average (33-for-109) with 15 runs scored. She smacked eight doubles, a triple and three home runs, and her 21 runs batted in are tied for the team lead. Pydynkowski is one of three Panther freshman regulars in the line-up who batted over .300.
Plymouth State takes a 25-14 overall record into this week's ECAC Tournament. PSU strung together a record 14-game winning streak earlier this season, and the 25 wins are second only to the 30-9 mark put together by the 2003 Panther squad.
