Two Plymouth State Softball players earn LEC honors

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Two Plymouth State University softball players received top weekly honors from the Little East Conference on Monday for their performances in the Panthers' season-opening trip to Florida.

Senior Courtney MacFarland (Hampstead, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) was selected LEC Pitcher of the Week and freshman Allie Luisi (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) was named LEC Rookie of the Week. They were key players as PSU returned from the Sunshine State with a 7-3 overall record.

A right-handed pitcher, MacFarland (right) posted three wins and two saves on the trip with one shutout and a 1.00 earned run average. She made seven appearances (five starts), allowing 29 hits and six walks in 35 innings, while striking out 26. MacFarland finished the week with a 3-2 record, including a 5-0 shutout win over Western New England, complete-game victories over Lasell (5-1) and SUNY New Paltz (7-2), and saves against Saint Lawrence University and Centenary College (N.J.)

While only one week into the season, MacFarland is off to a strong start and tops the LEC in innings pitched and strikeouts and shares the lead with two saves.

A freshman utility player, Luisi batted .364 in 10 games on the trip. She went 12-for-33 with three doubles, a home run, six RBI, and five runs scored. She also displayed her versatility, posting a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage at three positions (five games in center field, two in left field, two at catcher and one game as the designated player).

The Panthers begin their New England slate of games this Saturday in the Little East opener, a doubleheader at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (1:00 p.m.)
