PSU Softball takes two from Lyndon State

            PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Sophomores Kortney Nedeau (Kennebunk, Maine) and Melissa Caiazzo (Portland, Maine/Deering) combined for six hits and nine runs batted in Thursday afternoon as the Plymouth State University softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from Lyndon State College, 8-1 and 12-2, in the home opener at D&M Park.

            The two Panther pitchers also did not allow an earned run in the twinbill, limiting the Hornets to just four hits in each game.  PSU stopped a three-game losing skid and improved to 13-6 overall, while LSC dropped to 0-4.

            Senior Courtney MacFarland (Hampstead, N.H./Pinkerton) surrendered just four hits, one walk and one unearned run to win the first game for PSU, striking out seven and improving her record to 7-3.  Freshman Ali Keith (Northfield, N.H./Winnisquam) earned the win in the nightcap, improving to 2-1 after giving up four hits and two walks while fanning four.

            Nedeau had a two-run double and a pair of walks in four trips to the plate in the opener, and followed that up with two hits in the nightcap, including a three-run homer in the first inning.  Caiazzo had an RBI double to put PSU on the board in the first inning of the opener, and came back with an RBI single and a two-run double in the nightcap.

            Junior Kay LaBrie (Somersworth, N.H.) also scored three runs in the opener for PSU after reaching base three times on two walks and a single.  Sophomore Laura Kaplan (Franklin, N.H.) and freshman Jen Skilton (Bedford, N.H./West) added two hits each, with Skilton driving in two.  LaBrie, senior Heather Bartolo (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton) and junior Jenna George (Cumberland, R.I.) knocked in two runs each for PSU in the nightcap.

            Sophomore Trish Lussier (Lyndon, Vt.) led the Hornets in the first game, delivering an RBI single to break up the shutout.  Junior Theresa Danforth (Corinth, Vt.) and Kathy Kline (Coventry, R.I.) knocked in runs for Lyndon State in the nightcap.

            PSU returns to Little East Conference action Saturday at D&M Park with a 12 noon doubleheader against Western Connecticut State University.  Lyndon State plays a North Atlantic Conference twinbill Friday at Castleton State College (3:00 p.m.)
