PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The top pitcher on the Plymouth State University softball team was honored Tuesday with selection to the Little East Conference All-Star Team for the 2009 season.
Senior Courtney MacFarland (Hampstead, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) represented PSU on the All-LEC Second Team, as voted by the league's head coaches. MacFarland has helped lead the Panthers to a 22-16 overall record and an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) play-off berth.
A senior right-handed pitcher, MacFarland (right) has posted a 12-8 record this spring with a 1.66 earned run average. She struck out 101 batters in 134.2 innings while allowing just 111 hits and 19 walks. MacFarland ranks third in the LEC in strikeouts, fourth in victories, fifth in ERA, and tied for second in saves (3).
A three-year Panther co-captain, MacFarland has shown improvement every year on her way to All-Conference honors. She was just 3-9 as a freshman, then went 6-7 as a sophomore and posted her first winning season last year with an 8-6 mark. Her 12 wins this season is tied for third on PSU's single-season victory list, and her 29 career wins is tied for second on PSU's all-time victory list.
Plymouth State is the sixth seed in this week's ECAC New England Tournament. The Panthers open play Wednesday at third-seeded Saint Joseph's College in Standish, Maine (4:00 p.m.), with the winner advancing to a double-elimination tourney this weekend at the site of the highest remaining seed.
