PSU Softball drops two games in Florida

Panthers fall to Luther, Allegheny

            CLERMONT, Fla. – The Plymouth State University softball team was defeated in a pair of games Tuesday at the National Training Center, falling to Luther College (Iowa), 16-5, in the first game, and Allegheny College (Pa.), 4-3, in the nightcap. PSU is now 1-5 on the Florida trip, with three of the losses coming by one run.

            The first game between PSU and Luther was tied 1-1 after three innings but the Norse scored three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth before putting the game away with a 10-spot in the sixth.  The Panthers tallied their second run in the fourth inning and tacked on three in the bottom of the sixth.

            Freshman Cynthia Barata highlighted the Panther offense with her first home run of the season among her two hits.  Sophomore Bekah Jackson collected three hits, and senior Allie Luisi had two hits and an RBI.

            Plymouth State held a 1-0 lead through four innings of the nightcap before Allegheny tallied all four of its runs in the top of the fifth on two home runs, a solo shot by Sadie Stuart and a three-run blast  the bases loaded, and after scoring again in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by junior Jenn Bove, PSU was retired, stranding two more runners.

            The Panthers continue play on Thursday with two more games, facing Hope College (MIch.) and Lawrence University (Wisc.)
