PSU Softball splits LEC twinbill at Western Conn.
Hebert, Digman with key hits as Panthers take opener
DANBURY, Conn. – Sophomores Sam Hebert and Jackie Digman each had key RBI doubles as Plymouth State University defeated Western Connecticut State University, 7-4, in the first game of a Little East Conference softball doubleheader at WestConn's Westside Field.
Hebert smacked a bases-clearing double in the third inning to put PSU ahead 3-0, and Digman delivered a two-run double to highlight a seventh-inning comeback as PSU rallied from a 4-3 deficit. The Colonials came back to take the nightcap, 10-2, to split the twin bill.
Seven different Panthers accounted for PSU's seven hits in the opener. The top three batters in the Panther line-up got on base to set up the rallies, and each scored twice – junior Jenn Bove (Medford, Mass.), senior Allie Luisi and sophomore Bekah Jackson.
PSU scored four runs in the game-winning rally. Sophomore Taylor Mancini led off with a single and Bove singled though the right side to put two runners on. After a fielder's choice error tied the game and an intentional walk loaded the bases, Digman brought home two with a double and the final run scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Cynthia Barata.
Sophomore Nora Galvin earned her third win of the season for PSU with a complete-game effort, striking out eight.
WestConn scored five runs in the second inning of the nightcap, three in the third and never looked back. PSU salvaged two runs in the fifth inning as Mancini, Bove and Luisi all singled to load the bases, and Jackson singled home a run and Digman drove one in with a sacrifice fly.
After 16 games away from Plymouth, the Panthers will play their home opener Tuesday with a 3:30 pm non-conference doubleheader against Castleton State College. The Colonials host Wesleyan University on Tuesday.
