PSU Softball drops opener to The College of NJ

Panthers get into full swing on Sunday

CLERMONT, Fla. – The College of New Jersey erupted for eight runs in the fifth inning and defeated Plymouth State University, 12-3, in collegiate softball action at the National Training Center.

The game was the season opener for Plymouth State, and the first outdoor action of the spring, while TCNJ was in the process of completing its spring break week with a 9-3 record.  PSU scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut TCNJ's lead to 4-3, but the eight-run rally in the top of the fifth put the game away for the Lions.

Senior Kelly Hommen (Ridgewood, N.J.) had a banner day at the plate for TCNJ, going 4-for-4, while senior Liz Huttner (Princeton Junction, N.J.) had two hits and drove in three runs.

Sophomore Cynthia Barata (New Fairfield, Conn.) had a pair of hits to lead the Panthers, including a double and an RBI. Junior Jackie Digman (Burlington, Mass.) had a double in three trips to the plate, and senior Calli DeGrace (Plymouth, N.H.) and sophomore Whitney Roberts (Chocorua, N.H./Kennett) each knocked in runs.

PSU gets into full spring break action Sunday with two games at the National Training Center, facing Thomas College at 9:00 a.m. and Babson College at 11:00 a.m.
