PSU Softball splits pair in Florida
Panthers down Thomas but fall to Babson
CLERMONT, Fla. – The Plymouth State University softball team split a pair of games Sunday at the National Training Center, defeating Thomas College (Maine) in the first game, 5-2, but falling to Babson College in the second, 5-1.
Freshman pitcher Vanessa Przybylo (Queensbury, N.Y.) recorded her first win of the season for PSU with a complete-game effort in the opener. She allowed just two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four batters for her first career victory.
Senior Jenn Bove (Medford, Mass.) collected two hits to lead the Panther offense against Thomas. Bove and senior Calli DeGrace (Plymouth, N.H.) delivered RBI singles in the second inning to give PSU the lead, and the Panthers pulled away in the fifth inning with a three-run rally, sparked by an RBI single by junior Jackie Digman (Burlington, Mass.)
PSU took a 1-0 lead against Babson in the top of the first inning when junior Bekah Jackson (Nashua, N.H.) singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Sam Hebert (Manchester, N.H./Memorial). That ended up as the extent of the Panther offense for the game. PSU loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth inning but couldn't push a run across, and Hebert singled in the sixth and went to third on a pair of wild pitches, but was stranded at third.
Junior Kathleen Conway (Simsbury, Conn.) tossed her second complete-game victory in as many days for Babson, allowing just one unearned run on four hits, walked three and struck out 10.
The Panthers are back on the diamond Monday with two more games at the National Training Center, facing Plattsburgh State at 9:00 a.m. and Bethany College (W.Va.) at 11:00 a.m.
