PSU Softball splits with defending champ ECSU

Roberts leads Panthers to win in nightcap

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore pitcher Whitney Roberts (Chocorua, N.H.) allowed just one run on four hits Saturday afternoon as Plymouth State University edged defending champion Eastern Connecticut State University, 2-1, in the nightcap of a Little East Conference softball doubleheader at D&M Park.

The visiting Warriors captured the opener, 8-1, with a 12-hit attack, before the Panthers handed Eastern its first conference loss of the season in the nightcap.  The split of the twin bill give Eastern an 18-8 overall record and a 5-1 LEC mark, while PSU is now 16-11 overall and 3-3 in the Little East.

All three runs in the nightcap were scored in the first inning.  Eastern jumped ahead in the top half on a lead-off home run by senior Arielle Cooper (Mystic, Conn.)  The Panthers answered with a pair in the bottom half, as junior Bekah Jackson (Nashua, N.H.) and senior Jenn Bove (Medford, Mass.) led off with singles, junior Taylor Mancini (Gansevoort, N.Y.) delivered an RBI single to right, and freshman Vanessa Przybylo (Queensbury, N.Y.) brought home a run with an infield grounder.

Roberts and Eastern sophomore starter Erin Miller (Waterford, Conn.) blanked the opponents the rest of the way.  Roberts struck out two and improved her record to 8-3 this season, while Miller allowed just two runs on seven hits while striking out three, but suffered the tough-luck loss (6-2).

After each team scored once in the first inning of the opener, Eastern took the lead for good with a three-run second inning.  The Warriors pulled away with two more runs in the fourth and sixth innings.  Sophomore Sam Rossetti (Shelton, Conn.) led the way with three hits and five runs batted in, while Cooper and junior Mattie Brett (Waterford, Conn.) also had three hits apiece.  Freshman Alyssa Hancock (Waterford, Conn.) cracked her second home run of the season.

PSU managed just five hits in the opener from five different players, including a double by freshman Shirley Butterfield (Atkinson, N.H./Timberlane).

The Panthers are right back on the diamond Sunday at D&M Park with a non-conference doubleheader against New England College.  Eastern returns home to host UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday.
