Little East Conference honors for PSU student-athletes
Jackson, Garland represent Panthers on LEC weekly slate
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Two Plymouth State University student-athletes were recognized with weekly recognition from the Little East Conference (LEC) Monday as the Panthers head into the home stretch of the spring sports season.
PSU senior Bekah Jackson (Nashua, N.H./North) was named LEC Softball Player of the Week, and sophomore Ryan Garland (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) was selected LEC Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week. Both Panther standouts turned in outstanding individual performances, leading their teams to perfect records last week against conference competition.
A veteran shortstop, Jackson batted .529 (9-for-17) in PSU's 5-1 week (4-0 LEC) with two doubles, a triple, three home runs, five runs scored, 10 runs batted in, and a stolen base. She went 2-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBI in a win over Southern Maine, and she was 5-for-7 with a double, two home runs, three runs scored and seven RBI in an LEC doubleheader sweep of UMass Boston.
A two-time First Team All-LEC shortstop, Jackson is having another outstanding season. She leads the Little East with a .457 batting average, seven home runs, 72 total bases, an .889 slugging percentage, and a .532 on-base percentage; ranks second with 27 runs scored; third in hits (37), triples (4) and RBI (26), and fifth in stolen bases (11).
A 5'9", 160-pound long-stick middie, Garland helped a PSU defense that allowed just 6.5 goals per game in a 2-0 week for the Panthers. He picked up four ground balls and caused a turnover in an 11-7 conference win over Southern Maine, and collected six ground balls, a caused turnover and an assist in a 12-6 LEC victory over UMass Boston.
Garland helps lead a PSU defense that ranks second in ground balls per game (34.8) and third in caused turnovers (10.0/game). He ranks second on the team with 39 ground balls and 15 caused turnovers.
Both Panthers squads wrap up the regular season this week; the softball team hosts three doubleheaders at D&M Park, vs. Middlebury College on Tuesday, Keene State College on Wednesday, and Rhode Island College on Saturday; and the men's lacrosse team hosts Keene State College on Tuesday and before visiting Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday.
