PSU Softball drops first two games in Florida

Panthers fall to undefeated Luther and Clarkson

            CLERMONT, Fla. – The Plymouth State University softball team opened the 2015 season Sunday at the National Training Center, dropping a pair of games to Luther College (Iowa), 9-1, and Clarkson University (N.Y.), 8-0.

            Luther College, which finished last season 32-8 after losing in the NCAA Regional final, is off to a 10-0 start this spring, while Clarkson is now 4-2.

            The Panthers managed just two hits and scored their only run in the sixth inning against Luther. Senior Cynthia Barata (New Fairfield, Conn.) led off with a single, went to second when freshman Kim Leiter (Manchester, N.H.) was hit by a pitch, and scored on a single by freshman Rachel Morrissey (Salem, N.H.). Senior Whitney Roberts (Chocorua, N.H.) started in the circle for PSU and took the loss.

            Plymouth State collected three hits in the loss to Clarkson, one each by Morrissey and juniors Julia Royer (Pawcatuck, Conn.) and Nicole Abreu (Hudson, N.H.) Sophomore Callia Abbott (Atco, N.J.) pitched three innings and suffered the loss and gave way to freshman Allison Moylan (Methuen, Mass.) for the final two innings.

            PSU gets right back on the diamond Monday morning with two games, facing Tufts University at 9:00 a.m. and Bowdoin College at 11:00 a.m.
