PSU Softball falls to Utica and TCNJ in Florida

Panthers will look for first win on Thursday

CLERMONT, Fla. – The struggles continued for the Plymouth State University softball team Tuesday as the Panthers dropped a pair of games to Utica College, 5-2, and The College of New Jersey, 6-0, at the National Training Center.

Utica evens its season record at 3-3 while TCNJ is now 5-3 and Plymouth State is winless in six games this spring.

After Utica took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, the Panthers answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Junior Nicole Abreu (Hudson, N.H.) hit a two-out double to left field to score freshman Rachel Morrissey (Salem, N.H.), who had singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore Callia Abbott (Atco, N.J.) then singled to center to score Abreu to even the score.

PSU managed just two hits the rest of the way, while Utica tacked on one run in the fourth inning and two in the seventh to seal the win. Senior Whitney Roberts (Chocorua, N.H.) started in the circle for PSU and went the distance but suffered the setback.

The Panther bats remained silent in the second game against TCNJ, recording just three hits, including doubles by sophomore Katie Kennard (Concord, N.H.) and junior Julia Royer (Pawcatuck, Conn.) Freshman Allison Moylan (Methuen, Mass.) delivered a pinch-hit single in the seventh inning to push Royer over to third, but the next two batters couldn't knock her in and PSU was blanked for the third time this season.

After six games in three days against a strong slate of opponents, PSU will have Wednesday off and return to the diamond on Thursday at Trinity College (Conn.) at 9:00 a.m. and a second match-up this week against two-time defending national champion Tufts University at 11:00 a.m.
