Panthers come up empty against Colonials
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – The Western Connecticut State University softball team swept Plymouth State University in a key Little East Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at CCSU Softball Field.
The Colonials, now 12-8 overall and 3-1 in the conference, needed just five innings in both games to defeat the Panthers, 15-0 and 10-1.
Senior Nina Wojtkeiwicz (Griswold, Conn.) belted a home runs and drove in three runs for Western in the opener and finished the day by going 5-for-7 with four runs batted in and four runs scored from the lead-off spot.
In the opener Michaela Roche (Bristol, Conn.) went 2-for-2 with a grand slam home runs in Western's eight-run fourth inning. Emily Cintorino (Bristol, Conn.) improved to 5-2 on the season after allowing just three hits while striking out four over five innings.
Sophomore Nicole Abreu (Hudson, N.H.) collected two of the Panthers' three hits.
The Colonials raced out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning of the second game and went on to the win. Maegan Rodriguez (East Haven, Conn.) went 2-for-2 with a two-run triple to lead the Western offense. Erin Biskup (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with two RBI, a pair of stolen bases and two runs scored for the winners.
Alle Sabith (Meriden, Conn.) earned the win and is now 6-5 on the season. In three innings, she allowed three hits and walked two before yielding to freshman Samantha Avery (Ellington, Conn.) for the final two innings.
Sophomore Emma Rhodes (Rochester, N.H.) was 1-for-1 with the run scored for the Panthers, which drop to 4-13 overall and 0-3 in the Little East.
Both teams are still waiting to step on their own fields this season and hope to on Tuesday as Western is slated to host Rhode Island College at Westside Field and PSU is scheduled to host the University of Southern Maine.
