PSU Softball takes two from Lyndon State in extra innings

Panthers extend win streak to four; home opener Saturday vs. UMB

            LYNDONVILLE, Vt. – Plymouth State University needed extra innings in both ends of the doubleheader Thursday afternoon but defeated Lyndon State College in a pair of non-conference softball contests, 7-6 and 6-3, both games in eight innings.

            PSU has now won four in a row to improve to 8-13 overall, with wins in eight of their last 11 games. Lyndon State drops to 6-14.

            The teams were tied 5-5 through seven innings of the opener. PSU plated two runs in the top of the eighth, one on an infield error and one on an RBI single by freshman Nina Murray (Saugus, Mass.).Lyndon got one back in the bottom of the eighth, but PSU got the last two batters out on a pop-up and a strike out to claim the victory.

            The score was deadlocked at 3-3 after seven in the nightcap when PSU put up three runs in the top of the eighth. Sophomore Katie Kennard (Concord, N.H.) doubled home a run and classmate Julia Royer (Pawcatuck, Conn.) cracked a two-run home run. The Hornets went three-up, three-down in the bottom of the inning as the Panthers completed the sweep.

            PSU scored seven runs on 11 hits in the opener. Murray finished with three hits, including a double, while freshman Abrie Davis (Amherst, N.H.) had two hits, including a two-run first-inning home run. Kennard cracked a pair of doubles and sophomore Emma Rhodes (Rochester, N.H.) reached on a pair of singles.

            Senior Whitney Roberts (Chocorua, N.H.) picked up the win with six and one-third innings of relief, striking out five and walking four to improve her record to 5-6.

            PSU took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning of the nightcap. Senior Cynthia Barata (New Fairfield, Conn.) delivered a two-run double and freshman Lisa Osborne (Gilmanton, N.H.) added an RBI single. Osborne had two hits in the game.

            Freshman Jessica Pietersen (Norton, Mass.) earned the win with three innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits and two walks, striking out three and evening her record at 3-4. Classmate Allison Moylan (Methuen, Mass.) pitched the first fin innings, allowing two runs on six hits and no walks, fanning two.

            PSU returns for the home opener on Saturday as the Panthers host the University of Massachusetts Boston in a Little East Conference twin bill at D&M Park, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
