Panthers play key Little East games this weekend
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Plymouth State University softball team came out on the short side of both ends of a non-conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon, falling to Middlebury College 1-0 in the opener and 9-1 in six innings in the nightcap.
The first game was a duel between PSU senior Whitney Roberts (Chocorua, N.H.) and Middlebury's Neve Stearns. Roberts allowed the only run of the game and seven hits in the complete-game effort, striking out two but suffering the loss (7-7). Stearns improved to 7-3 with the shutout victory, allowing just five hits while fanning four.
Middlebury scored the only run it would need in the third inning when Kat Maehr singled, went to third on a pair of wild pitches, and scored on a single by Erin Giles. PSU had a runner at third with one out in the third but couldn't convert a run, its best chance to score in the opener.
The home team struck for three runs in the first inning of the second game, and pulled away with two runs in each the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. The Panthers managed just two hits in the first five innings before getting on the board in the sixth. Sophomore Rachel Morrissey (Salem, N.H.) singled with one out, went to second on a passed ball and scored on a pinch-hit single to left by junior Nicole Abreu (Hudson, N.H.). Middlebury scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to end it.
PSU wraps up the regular season this weekend with a pair of Little East Conference doubleheaders, Saturday on Senior Day at D&M Field against the University of Massachusetts Boston and Sunday at Keene State College.
