Morrissey spurs six-run first inning for Panthers
CLERMONT, Fla. – Junior Rachel Morrissey (Salem, N.H.) hit a two-run double to highlight a six-run first inning Friday afternoon as Plymouth State University won its softball season opener over Emerson College, 7-4, at the National Training Center.
PSU collected 10 hits in the game, including two each by sophomore Abrie Davis (Amherst, N.H.) and junior Emma Rhodes (Rochester, N.H.). Morrissey and freshman Melissa Goss (Templeton, Mass.) recorded doubles and freshman Lindsey Hall (Midlothian, Va.) started the first-inning rally with a lead-off triple.
Senior Nicole Abreu (Hudson, N.H.) and Rhodes also delivered RBI singles in the first-inning rally. Sophomore Taylor Wood (Londonderry, N.H.) brought home PSU's final run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.
Senior Whitney Roberts (Chocorua, N.H.) started in the circle for PSU and earned the victory. She pitched five innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks, striking out three. Freshman Kayla Mathieu (Fairfax, Vt.) worked two innings of scoreless relief in her collegiate debut.
PSU gets right back on the diamond Saturday morning with two games, facing WPI at 11:00 a.m. and Western New England University at 1:00 p.m.
