Panthers edged by Rensselaer and Bowdoin
CLERMONT, Fla. – The Plymouth State University softball teams played two tough games on Wednesday and suffered a pair of losses, falling to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 1-0, and Bowdoin College, 4-2, at the National Training Center.
The first game was a pitching duel between RPI senior Victoria Hepworth and PSU freshman Kayla Mathieu (Fairfax, Vt.). Hepworth worked into the seventh inning, allowing no runs on six hits and one walk, striking out four, while Mathieu matched her and went the distance, surrendering just one run on seven hits while fanning one.
RPI scored the only run of the game in the top of the first inning on a walk, a sacrifice bunt, and an RBI single to center. PSU put a runner on base in every inning except the third, and had runners at second and third with one out in the seventh inning on a double by freshman Cassidy Emerson (Concord, N.H.) and a single and stolen base by sophomore Allison Moylan (Methuen, Mass.), but couldn't plate the tying run. Emerson and Moylan finished the game with two hits apiece.
PSU scored a pair of unearned runs in the second inning against Bowdoin to take a 2-1 lead. The first came home on a Bowdoin error, and freshman Debra Morrill (Concord, N.H.) singled in another. The Polar Bears came back to tie the game in the fourth inning, and a two-run single by Katie Gately in the fifth inning proved to be the difference.
Junior Katie Kennard (Concord, N.H.) had a pair of doubles to represent two of PSU's four hits. Senior Whitney Roberts (Chocorua, N.H.) went the distance for PSU, allowing four runs on eight hits, striking out three, but took the loss (2-2).
PSU, 4-5 overall, continues its busy week in Florida with two games on Thursday, facing Lasell College at 3:00 p.m. and Becker College at 5:00 p.m.
