PSU Softball splits pair with Lasell and Becker

Panthers down Lasers but fall to Hawks

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Plymouth State University softball team split a pair of games Thursday at the National Training Center, defeating Lasell College in five innings in the opener, 8-0, but falling to Becker College in the second game, 4-2.

The win over Lasell stopped a three-game losing skid for PSU, which is now 5-6 on the Florida trip. Lasell is now 3-7 on the season and Becker is 2-6.

PSU exploded for eight runs on 12 hits in the win over Lasell. The Panthers put up four runs in the third inning and three in the fourth and one in the fifth. Freshman Kayla Mathieu (Fairfax, Vt.) and sophomore Allison Moylan (Methuen, Mass.) combined on a four-hit shutout for PSU.

Senior Whitney Roberts (Chocorua, N.H.) led the Panthers hitters against the Lasers with two doubles and six runs batted in. Four other Panthers also had two hits in the game – junior Katie Kennard (Concord, N.H.), sophomore Abrie Davis (Amherst, N.H.), and freshmen Lindsey Hall (Midlothian, Va.) and Cassidy Emerson (Concord, N.H.)

A bases-loaded walk by Emerson brought home PSU's first run in the third inning, and Roberts then cleared the bases with a three-run double. Emerson then singled home a run in the fourth inning, and Roberts followed again with a bases-clearing double. Kennard added PSU's eighth run in the fifth inning with an RBI single.

Becker scored single runs in the first two innings of the second game, but PSU tied the score with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run single by Kennard. The Hawks regained the lead with a run in the sixth and added an insurance marker in the top of the seventh.

Junior Callia Abbott (Atco, N.J.) pitched the first four innings for PSU, allowing two runs on six hits, striking out three. Roberts allowed two runs over the final three innings and took the loss.

PSU is right back on the diamond Friday morning, facing North Park University at 9:00 a.m. and Trinity College at 11:00 a.m.
