PSU Softball drops final game on Florida trip

Panthers wind up trip with six-win improvement over last year

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Plymouth State University softball team wrapped up its Spring Break trip to Florida Saturday morning at the National Training Center, falling to Benedictine University (Ill.), 6-2.

The Panthers wind up with Florida trip with a 6-8 record, a six-win improvement over last year's 0-10 mark.

PSU managed just five hits against the Eagles, including a double by sophomore Allison Moylan (Methuen, Mass.) and a triple by junior Katie Kennard (Concord, N.H.).

After Benedictine took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, PSU battled back with runs in the third and fourth innings. Moylan doubled with one out in the third and scored on a single by sophomore Nina Murray (Saugus, Mass.), and Kennard's triple in the fourth plated freshman Lindsey Hall (Midlothian, Va.), who had led off with a walk.

That turned out to be the extent of PSU's offense, and the Eagles added one insurance run in the fourth inning and two in the fifth to secure the win.

Freshman Kayla Mathieu (Fairfax, Vt.) pitched the first inning and took the loss (3-2) for PSU. Junior Callia Abbott (Atco, N.J.) worked three hitless innings of relief, giving up an unearned run.

Plymouth State will have some down time before returning to action on Thursday, Mar. 31, with a non-conference doubleheader at Salem State University (4:00 p.m.)
