Murray collects four hits for Panthers in losses

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University managed just six hits Thursday afternoon, dropping a non-conference doubleheader to Castleton University, 6-0 and 5-1, at D&M Park.

Castleton's Kayla Wood threw her second shutout of the season in game one, allowing just four hits over seven innings of work and striking out nine. Cassidy Tedeschi got the start in the circle in game two, working five innings and allowing just one unearned run while striking out three, and Taylor Paquette closed it out, working two shutout innings.

The Spartans are now 13-11 on the season, while Plymouth State falls to 9-21 overall.

Sophomore Nina Murray (Saugus, Mass.) provided the highlights for the Panthers, collecting two hits in each game for four of the team's hits, including the only two in the nightcap. Junior Katie Kennard (Concord, N.H.) and freshman Lindsey Hall (Midlothian, Va.) also reached base safely on hits for the Panthers.

The Spartans jumped out to an early lead in game one, plating a pair of first inning runs. Carone scored on a fielder's choice by Chelsea Grady to make it 1-0, before Gagne laced a single into right center to score Brayman and make it 2-0.

The Spartans would tack on two more in the second inning, as Gagne again ripped a single into right field to score Timi Carone and Jessica Babcock and make it a 4-0 game. The Spartan bats were back at it in the fourth. Brayman and Grady tallied back-to-back singles with two outs before coming around to score on a single up the middle by Carpenter.

The Spartans got out to an early lead in game two, striking for a trio if runs in the top of the first. Plymouth State got one back in the bottom of the first, as they pushed across a run on a walk by junior Emma Rhodes (Rochester, N.H.), two infielder's errors and a fielder's choice to make it 3-1.

The two sides would remain scoreless until the fifth inning, when Brayman launched a two-out, two-run home run down the left field line to extend the lead to 5-1 and close out the scoring in the contest.

The Panthers return to Little East Conference action Saturday with a visit to Rhode Island College for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader. PSU will also be home for a Senior Day doubleheader against New England College on Sunday, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
